Training Workshop Scheme – What you need to know

Group discussionIFPH provides specialised high quality training-workshop programmes designed to help leader in public health, scientists, nutritionists, health professionals and dietitians to demonstrate competence in, and be up to date with, their subjects of interest. Completion of IFPH training-workshop programmes will add value to organisations by providing them with expertly trained staff and will provide the delegate with greater confidence in their abilities, contributing to their career development.

The courses are a combination of workshops and lectures (lab work for practical courses is included), providing interaction and knowledge transfer with tutors and other delegates. IFPH also provides customised on-site courses tailored to meet your exact requirements. Background

Short Training Courses in Public Health Sciences are a unique initiative of the International Forum for Public Health – IFPH, London UK aimed at the integration of the study of these various disciplines to promote better health for all sections of society. The IFPH provides innovative and academically challenging training courses incorporating environment, food, nutrition, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and public health. Other areas of activity include aspects of food safety and security and dietetic applications of innovative food products (Nutraceuticals) in health and disease.

The mission of the IFPH is to contribute to the improvement of sciences, nationally and internationally, through quality research, teaching, and training for a better understanding of the sciences of public health and their impact on human health and development.

Located in the heart of London, the IFPH reflects the ability of the Forum to provide an interdisciplinary approach to professional training for a wide range of allied health and sciences graduates.

The dedicated staff of these training-workshop courses has a broad range of backgrounds in analytical, nutritional and public health sciences as well as experience in running international health and development projects covering a wide range of subjects. This multi-disciplinary team forms a network of experts operating both within the UK and externally.

Training-workshops information

1.1 Introduction
The training-workshops are fAll fees are payable in advance and only 75% of the fee will be refunded if cancellation is received by the IFPH 10 days or more, before the course commences. Once a course has commenced absolutely no refunds will be given.lexible and presented in appropriate format. Participants may enrol according to their individual needs for a training-workshop or hands-on practical training. The duration of the course will vary from three days to weeks or more depending on individual choice, mode of study and professional level.

This directory lists a number of intensive mode short training-workshops offered by the IFPH. Other specialist short courses of various formats may be arranged from time to time, details of which can be obtained on application.

1.2 Special courses:
The IFPH-staff is pleased to discuss the provision of special courses in any of the topics in this directory. The courses can be held at the IFPH-London’s office or in-house at the client's premises, and can be mounted in a variety of formats depending on the organisation for which they are arranged. Courses such as NCDs, Nutrition and Health, Food Safety, Practical-based instrumental courses are a few examples of such special courses. Special courses have been conducted for a diversity of institutions and organisation including the Ministry of Health and various universities worldwide in particular developing countries in Africa, the Far East, Asia and Middle East. The IFPH-staff can assist you with planning for your customised training requirements.

1.3 Class size and location:
The class size is in the region of 1 to 9; maximum numbers apply to certain courses. Such maximums allow the facilitators to devote more time to each participant in personal tuition. All courses are held at IFPH premises unless otherwise stated.

1.4 Training Course format
Courses start on Monday for either 3 or 5 days. Sessions are held from 10:30pm to 3:30pm apart (breaking one hour for lunch).

1.5 Fees
All fees are payable in advance and only 75% of the fee will be refunded if cancellation is received by the IFPH 10 days or more, before the course commences. Once a course has commenced absolutely no refunds will be given.

1.6 Cancellation of courses
The IFPH reserves the right to cancel or reschedule courses. In the event of cancellation of a course by the IFPH a full refund is payable.

Cheques should be sent in advance and made payable to the ‘International Forum For Public Health’.

Applications will be treated on a first come first served basis and, when a course is full, a reserve list will be started. In the event of cancellations, places will be offered to those on the waiting list. If demand is sufficient a second course may be mounted if staff is available.

 Nature of IFPH training-workshop

 This IFPH training-workshop is approached as an action-learning activity that is participant-centred and tailored to the needs of the potential/ partner organisation. After the start with a wide-ranging exchange of ideas, the discussions will become more and more action-oriented and resulted at the end in a concrete proposal for action. In the discussions, plenary and in small groups, participants will bring in their ideas and will share their experiences and insights. The practical programme within the IFPH training-workshop enables a hands-on and step-wise approach to the development of skills in community diagnosis of public health issue using appropriate tools and survey data. Participants add to their own knowledge in quick time, while picking-up skills and enjoying the friendly atmosphere of the workshop-programme. All workshop facilitators are fully well trained specialists in their field with a ‘simple touch’ to participant learning.

Participants are selected according to their professional experience and involvement with capacity building such as allied health specialty, research, training/education and programme planning and implementation in the field of public health, community health and wellbeing.

. Training-Workshop Methods

 IFPH relies on a variety of training and facilitation methods and techniques. Used whenever applicable, these methods are aimed at enhancing individual and group interaction while maximising learning.

Some of these methods are:

·      Brief presentations by the consultant/facilitator.
·      Group debriefs.
·      Individual and team exercises, indoors and outdoors.
·      Behavior modeling and role-plays.
·      One-to-one and group discussions followed by individual or group presentation.
·      Case studies, simulations and small projects.
·      Video films, videotaping and playback.
·      Self-analysis questionnaires and learning instruments.
·      Assessment tests at the beginning (pre-test) and end (post-test) of training workshops.
·      Individual action plans (to follow up and evaluate training-workshop results).

Most training programs are facilitated by bilingual (English and Arabic) consultants. ‘On-site’ training workshops are held from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (lunch included). However, Off-site training workshops can be more intensive with extended hours.

5. Action Plans and Training-Workshop Follow-Up

To ensure the concepts in Public Health and skills introduced in our training workshops are duly transferred to the workplace and community, IFPH is ready to incorporate an “Action Plan” section at the end of any training-workshop. This section will constitute an integral part of the training-workshop and will be completed by the participants before the closing of the workshop.

If requested by the participant, IFPH also stands ready to design a follow-up training-workshop session and/or consult with the partner to try to expedite the transfer of learning to the workplace/community and to deal with any post-training-workshop issues, which may impact the organisation’s framework.

6. Consultant’s Feedback

At the formal request of the partner, IFPH will be glad to provide a brief evaluation of the participants (attendance, participation, etc.) and to provide the partner’s Management/Decision maker with a summary evaluation of the training-workshop.

7. IFPH’s Professional Certificate (IFPH-PC)

The purpose of this certificate is to recognise public health professionals with the commitment and dedication to plan their personal training-workshop and development in such a way so as to achieve official recognition.

The IFPH-PC will be awarded to those who, in their respective fields:

1. Have attended one of the “Professional Certification” programs listed in this directory, and
2. Have successfully passed, upon completion of the program, the assessment test administered at the end of the program, and
3. Have successfully completed the project assigned to them by the Program Leader (assigned by IFPH-consultant) within the       timeframe agreed. The IFPH-PC will attest that you have met the professional standards that IFPH has developed and nurtured over the years. You will receive, in addition to the Attendance Certificate, a special IFPH-PC Certificate that will attest your credentials as a Certified Public Health Professional – majoring ‘the title of the training-workshop’.

 Special Features of the IFPH-PC:

 ·  Tests will be administered at the completion of each Professional Certification Training-Workshop (Pass rate is 70%). Participants will be notified whether they have passed or not. Actual exam scores will not be disclosed.

 ·   Projects will be assigned by the Program Leader who will agree to the subject you choose and set the standards, including timelines.

 ·   The certification program you attend with IFPH will earn you, in addition to your entitlement to the IFPH-PC and Attendance Certificate, the CPE Credits that IFPH has assigned to individual training-workshop per se.
